WHAT IS THE BFI SCREENWRITING ACADEMY?

FADE IN:

INT. BFI RESIDENTIAL ACADEMY – DAY

DAVID ALMOND (writer)
The best tip for writing is just to write; to sit down and write, to begin doing it and not to be scared by the blank page.

Whether you’re a talented writer who has always fancied writing their own screenplays, or a passionate filmmaker desperate to hone their skills in screenwriting, the BFI Residential Programme in Screenwriting is the opportunity you’ve been looking for!

GEORGE LUCAS (filmmaker)
Although I write screenplays, I don’t think I’m a good writer.

Hosted by Tyneside Cinema and BFI, the academy gives 25 of the most talented and committed young writers living in the UK the chance to develop their screenwriting talent and kick-start a career in the film industry!

AARON SORKIN (screenwriter)
Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright.

They will gain the craft skills necessary to succeed as a screenwriter, get an exclusive insider’s view of how to break into the film business, and network with leading industry professionals. Better still, on completion of the programme, participants will be helped to secure a film-related work-placement to further develop their skills, knowledge and networks in the movie business.

Jean-Luc Godard (filmmaker)
A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end… but not necessarily in that order.

The new programme is being delivered in three parts between January and February 2016, and includes two residentials at the historic Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle upon Tyne.

BETH BRANDON (screenwriter)
‘Now. What are you doing still reading this? You’ve got writing to do!’
